Q. What does Samaritan House do?
A. Samaritan House helps low-income families and individuals achieve self-sufficiency. We are a non-profit organization providing a broad range of free services including food, clothing, shelter, free medical care, worker resources, and counseling, to low-income residents in San Mateo County. We provide these services with the help of volunteers.  

Q. How many people are helped?
A. Each year Samaritan House is able to provide help to approximately 12,000 recipients, many of them children.

Q. How do those in need receive help?
A. When people in need first come to Samaritan House, they meet with one of our bilingual case workers. They are then screened and an individual service plan is developed. From this point forward, case workers use all means possible to help them increase their self-sufficiency.

A. Samaritan House has 41 full-time and 24 part-time employees.

Q. How is my donation dollar spent?
A. If you give us $1.00, 85 cents are spent on programs, 5 cents on administration and 10 cents on fundraising.

SHELTER

Q. What is Safe Harbor?
A. Safe Harbor is a 90-bed shelter in South San Francisco. In its clean and safe environment, men and women are offered job services, substance abuse counseling and other services. The goal is to assist the homeless in rebuilding their lives, achieving self-sufficiency and reestablishing family relationships.

FOOD PROGRAM

Q. How many people does Samaritan House feed?
A. About 2,000 people receive nutritional assistance from Samaritan House each month.

Q. Where does the food come from?
A. Samaritan House receives food donations from individuals, grocery stores, Project Wee Care and the Second Harvest food bank. Also local businesses, schools, churches and post offices contribute significant amounts of food. San Mateo High School has been particularly helpful in collecting food resources through their world record breaking holiday food drive.

CLOTHES CLOSET

Q. What does the Clothes Closet provide?
A. Quality new and used clothing is made available each month to more than 700 clients. NOTE: We have temporarily closed the Clothes Closet and will reopen it sometime in 2008.

Q. How do clients obtain goods from the Clothes Closet?
A. Clients are referred to the Clothes Closet by a case worker. Only clients may shop at the Clothes Closet. It is not a thrift store.

HEALTH CARE

Q. What kind of health services does Samaritan House provide?
A. Volunteer medical professionals provide primary and specialty care at our two Free Clinics. Services include  dentistry, gynecology, breast cancer screenings, dermatology, diabetic care, endocrinology, neurology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, pediatrics, optometry, podiatry, pulmonology, rheumatology, nutritional counseling, psychology, and psychiatry.

Q. How many patients are seen?
A. Each year we provide over 9,000 patient visits to uninsured people at our San Mateo and Redwood City Free Clinics.

HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE

Q. What is the Holiday Program?
A. The Holiday program offers food baskets and toys during the holidays to low-income families.

Q. How many people participate in the Holiday program?
A. About 4,500 families are helped each year.

WORKER RESOURCE CENTER

Q. What is the Worker Resource Center?
A. The Worker Resource Center is a collaboration between the City of San Mateo and Samaritan House and provides an alternative location for temporary laborers and potential employers to meet for work.

Q. How can I volunteer?
A. All volunteers are welcome. Please contact our Volunteer Director, Michele Canning, at (650) 341-4081 ext 33. She will be happy to make arrangements for an orientation or tour.
