October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Thanks to a generous grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Samaritan House Breast Care Clinic (BCC) provides care for women without any insurance, earning up to four times the poverty level. The BCC offers a free clinical breast examination with a qualified physician who specializes in breast care and referrals for free mammography and other services from medical providers who partner with the Samaritan House BCC. Our BCC meets weekly, and is part of the larger Samaritan House Free Clinic, which provides primary and some specialty care. The Free Clinic is part of the greater Samaritan House community services organization, which provides food, clothing and shelter. For more information, visit www.samaritanhouse.com. Potential clients should call our Client Services office, 650-347-3648, for an eligibility screening.

AAA of San Mateo donates funds for Kids Closet

The January 4th check presentation at AAA of San Mateo included (l-r) Irene Hall, Asst. District Sales Manager; Edyta Zulick, Vacation Sales Specialist; Denver Pugh, District Sales Manager; Cindy Zbin, Samaritan House Director of Development; and Kathy Davis, Sales and Service Generalist.

When the AAA of San Mateo "Turkeys on Tow Trucks" program presented Thanksgiving turkeys to Samaritan House, District Sales Manager Denver Pugh and Asst. District Sales Manager Irene Hall took the opportunity to tour Samaritan House. They were particularly interested in the Kids Closet, which provides clothes to children in need. Discovering that the Kids Closet needed boys' pants and shoes, Denver and Irene immediately took the need back to their office, where a very generous $2,000 was raised to help out. The spontaneous generosity is much appreciated, and will go far to ensure that children receive the clothing they need.

Golden Gate Harley Owners Group/Ladies of Harley, a new combined group, show strong support for Samaritan House

Posing in the rain, intrepid members of the Golden Gate Harley, including the Ladies of Harley, are shown as they deliver food and gift cards to the Samaritan House Holiday food distribution November 20th.

When Peninsula Harley Davidson in San Mateo closed this fall, its Ladies of Harley at first thought they would have to cancel their annual Thanksgiving food drive and ride for Samaritan House. But Director Dominique Sugarbroad and Assistant Director Karen Schacht did not want to give up on supporting Samaritan House. They soon found a new home for the group and the food drive at Dudley Perkins Company Harley-Davidson in South San Francisco. The new Golden Gate Harley Owners Group based at Dudley Perkins Company now comprises the former San Mateo, San Francisco, and Golden Gate - Marin County Harley Owners Groups. All gave generously when Dudley Perkins Company set out Samaritan House collection barrels and advertised the drive. The result was three large barrels of food, plus $550 in gift card donations, delivered to Samaritan House November 20th. Due to rain, most of the riders were in cars, but it was a time for celebration!

Rotary contributes DISH network to Safe Harbor

Safe Harbor residents are enjoying DISH network entertainment and educational programming thanks to the efforts of (left to right) Norm Miller, President of the Rotary Club of South San Francisco; Carolyn Livengood, Columnist for the San Mateo County Times; Maryam Bhimji, Director of Safe Harbor Shelter; and Don Bowutt, a Director of the Rotary Club of South San Francisco.

When San Mateo County Times columnist Carolyn Livengood honored Safe Harbor residents by attending their Talent Show in August, she enjoyed the performances and asked Shelter Director Maryam Bhimji if there was anything on the shelter wish list she could help with. Maryam responded that the shelter had no cable television and there was a need for better reception. In addition to entertainment, the shelter wanted to provide informational shows such as "Dr. Oz."

Carolyn immediately jumped into spending hours researching how to provide the service and soon joined forces with the Rotary Club of South San Francisco. It turned out that years ago the Rotary had provided DISH service, but with changes in personnel at both Safe Harbor and the Rotary, the service had "fallen through the cracks." Following Carolyn's inquiries, Rotary Director Don Bowcutt and President Norm Martin cut through red tape to enable the Rotary Club of South San Francisco to have the service reinstalled. Today Safe Harbor residents are enjoying the increased access to information and entertainments, thanks to these generous people and their fine organizations.
